RETROSPEKTIVE
PURSIMIEHENKATU 26G, 00150 HELSINKI
September 20th - October 28th, 2025
The first necessity required for a retrospective show, is a look back at decades of an artists work. The second, is to organize these works chronologically, showing how the artists style, themes and technique have developed over time. This is what Olga Sophie Kauppinen’s ‘Retrospektive’ fulfills- if only by providing an overview of the last two decades. The necessity of choosing this format for an exhibition becomes apparent, as Kauppinen’s prolific practice has created hundreds of paintings, which have been largely unseen by the public. A portion of the works were created in New York, and the other in Finland, after the year 2020, when she moved back to her native Helsinki.
‘Retrospektive’ offers a full scope view into the past, present, future, of an artists work, who does not believe in the traditional concept of time. Merging paradoxes between art historical references, commitment to deep understanding of material, as well as humor and experimentation, Kauppinen’s work aims to exist in the now, and let questions and open ended visual proposals lead the way.
Intuition, quantum physics, and the subconscious mind are themes that she frequents, whether it be through memories from dream states or through the semi lucidity of the drawings in her many notebooks.
In ‘Retrospektive’, Kauppinen showcases a decades long formation of a personal bridge to the divine, by embracing creation through imperfection and learning how to embrace our shared experience of humanity. Her intention is to inspire viewers energetic access to another dimension by referencing personal experiences and memories.
